Air-cooled spindles require ~12,000+ RPM minimum. Steel cutting requires water-cooled (3,000–8,000 RPM) plus mist coolant on the workpiece.

The machine frame determines rigidity and work area. The spindle determines material capability. Choosing the right spindle is the most consequential configuration decision — it controls what materials you can run and at what quality.
Minimum operating speed 12,000 RPM. Simpler installation — no coolant reservoir or circulation pump required. Best choice for woodworkers, sign shops, makers, and prototype operations. Ideal for continuous routing operations at high RPM. Right for shops that do not need to cut ferrous metals.
RPM range 1,000 to 18,000. Required for cutting steel and ferrous materials — air-cooled spindles cannot maintain proper cutting speed for ferrous work. Lower operating noise. Longer continuous duty cycle. Requires coolant reservoir and circulation pump. The 3.5kW water-cooled ER20 is the recommended starting point for ferrous material operations.
Auto tool changer — 20-taper, lightweight heads
Auto tool changer — 30-taper, production grade, 7.5kW
Manual collet — most common, wide tooling availability
Manual collet — larger shank, reduced deflection on heavy cuts
Every RigidCore machine ships with RigidDrive BLDC servo motors — designed specifically for this platform. True field-oriented control. Absolute encoder standard. No homing required at power-on. Position is always known.
Field-oriented control — also called sinusoidal commutation — delivers smoother torque at all speeds compared to trapezoidal stepper control. No missed steps. No position errors from load spikes. The motor always knows exactly where it is.
Every RigidDrive motor ships with an absolute encoder. Position is known at power-on — no homing sequence required. The machine is ready to run from the position it was in when it was last powered off. This is how industrial servo systems work.
RigidDrive 400 (400W continuous), RigidDrive 600 (600W continuous), RigidDrive 750 (750W continuous). All classes: NEMA 34 frame, 48V DC, CAN bus 1ms control loop, thermal protection. Motor class matched to machine size and cutting load at time of configuration.
A patent-pending adaptive hybrid structural member. Outperforms cast iron at a fraction of the weight. Every RigidCore CNC is built on this technology.
3D-printed gyroid channels create continuous load paths with optimal stiffness-to-weight. Epoxy-filled channels bond skin to core at every contact point.
Fiberglass reinforced polymer tubes at load-critical locations. Galvanically safe, excellent damping, zero corrosion risk in coolant environments.
Epoxy with glass microspheres. 30–40% lower density than pure epoxy with improved vibration damping through impedance mismatch at material boundaries.
Same process produces fast gantry beams (light, high frequency) and damped table beams (dense, vibration absorbing). Same shell, different performance.
Counterbored holes create epoxy mushroom-head keys — geometric interlock that doesn't rely on adhesion. Truss pattern between rails increases bonding surface.
Modular sections under 150 lbs (68 kg) for standard freight. Steel sleeves span joints, transferring full bending loads continuously.
6061 Al extrusion — 1" (25mm) grid. Versatile fixturing with clamps, vises, and stops.
3/4" (19mm) phenolic — replaceable. Ideal for wood, MDF, foam. Sacrificial surface.
MDF plenum + surface gasket + vacuum pump. Full-sheet access with no clamps.
Al T-slot perimeter + vacuum center zone. Clamp the edges, vacuum the field.

Air-cooled is simpler and better for most shops. The moment you want to cut steel, you need water-cooled + mist. Here's exactly which spindle to choose and why.
Air-cooled spindle, no mist coolant needed. Start with 2.2kW ER20 air-cooled. Upgrade to 3.5kW for hardwood production or ATC for multi-tool sign work. Every 48" machine ships ready for this category.
Air-cooled works for light passes. Sustained aluminum production needs 3.5kW with mist coolant. Water-cooled recommended for brass, copper, and production aluminum. Thermal stability matters.
Air-cooled fans die below 12,000 RPM. Steel needs 3,000–8,000 RPM. Water-cooled spindle + mist coolant on the workpiece is non-negotiable. The RigidCore composite beam is specifically designed to damp the chatter that makes steel finishing impossible on aluminum-frame competitors.
Every competitor in our price range builds their gantry from structural aluminum extrusion — damping ratio of 0.001–0.003. Vibration energy introduced at the tool tip bounces around with nowhere to go, producing chatter marks on the cut surface. On wood and foam, this doesn't matter. On steel, it's fatal. The RigidCore composite beam — with its gyroid architecture, GRP tubes, and syntactic foam fill — achieves damping ratios 10× higher than aluminum. Combined with true BLDC servo control from RigidDrive motors and 1ms closed-loop correction from RigidPulse, the result is surface finishes that aluminum-frame machines physically cannot achieve.

We've run three other CNC routers in this shop over the past decade. The RC-PRO4848 cut our setup time in half and the surface finish on aluminum is something we couldn't get before without a VMC. The composite beam is not a gimmick — it's noticeably stiffer than anything we've run.
Switched from an Avid Pro60 to the RC-PRO60120. The BLDC motors alone were worth it. No more missed steps on long Y-axis runs, and the chatter detection caught a worn collet before it ruined a $400 blank. This machine pays attention in a way our old setup never could.
We do sign work and cabinet components. The 4848 handles both without compromise. The AI feed adjustment actually slows down on tight radius cuts and pushes harder on open passes. The toolpaths just work better than they used to.
